Canada Day

3rd Annual

Sechelt Canada Day Mile

10:45 am Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Join us for the Sechelt Canada Day Mile—an exciting way to celebrate the holiday and participate in the July 1st festivities! The race starts 15 mins before the Canada Day Parade (organized by the Sechelt Downtown Business Association) and goes along the main parade route twice, in front of thousands of enthusiastic spectators. Younger kids can choose to run straight down Cowrie Street just once to the finish (500m). Hosted by Sunshine Coast Athletics.

Registration

By Mail: Printable form (PDF) Cheques payable to Sunshine Coast Athletics. Mail in your entry, postmarked by June 10th, 2008, to Sunshine Coast Athletics, c/o 8155 Westwood Road, Halfmoon Bay, BC V0N 1Y1.

In Person (race day): You can register on race day at the start area from 9:30 to 10:30am (late fees apply). Come to the registration table at the parking lot at the north end of Cowrie (at Shorncliffe), in front of Rockwood. Look for the Trail Bay Source for Sports tent. Printable form (PDF)

Day of race registration and bib number pickup will be open between 9:30 and 10:30 am. If you arrive after 10:30 it will be too late to sign up—we cannot delay the start!

Entry Fees

Cash, cheque or money order accepted. Payable to Sunshine Coast Athletics. Five bank machines are located near the race: Royal Bank at Trail Bay Mall, Bank of Montreal at the south end of Cowrie, Sunshine Coast Credit Union on Teredo (SC Highway) at Inlet, Scotiabank in Teredo Square (near Inlet), and CIBC on Wharf near Teredo.

Course Description and Map

Course is accurately measured with a Jones Counter. This is a 'loop and a half' course, designed so you will run past the biggest crowds twice: in the first 500m and again for the last 400m! Starting at 10:45am SHARP from the north end of Cowrie Street (near Sechelt Elementary), follow the parade route straight down Cowrie past the mall and all the shops. Turn left onto Inlet, then left again onto Mermaid. Follow Mermaid to the end, turning left on Ocean, then left again on Cowrie and down Cowrie for the second time to the finish at Inlet.

course map, click to enlarge

The Cowrie Street portions (first and last 400m) are slightly downhill and the Mermaid portion (in the middle of the race) has a gentle rise at the beginning, flattening out towards the end.

Directions: Turns will be marked with yellow signs at the side of the road, and volunteer marshals will point the way. Every 400m will be marked.

Timing and Results

Wear your bib number on your front where it is clearly visible. The race will be hand-timed with a printer-timer. After crossing the finish line, you will be handed a popsicle stick with your finishing position marked on it. Please stay in the same order you finished until you receive your stick. As soon as all runners have finished, you must bring your popsicle stick to us (look for the person with the clipboard) so we can record your finish position and match it up with the printed finish times (no stick = no result). Results will be posted on this website by the end of the day.

Post-race and Awards

Following the race, enjoy watermelon, water and cookies, and watch the parade go by while results are tabulated. Hang around near the finish for draw prizes donated by Trail Bay Source for Sports, plus medals to the first male and female finisher in each age division.

Age Divisions

Male and Female: 9 and Under, 10-12, 13-15, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+

Volunteers needed!

We will need 5 course marshals and a couple of finish line assistants. Please contact us at 604-885-8849 or sca@telus.net. If you're coming to watch the parade anyway, why not volunteer? It's fun!

Thanks to our Sponsors and Supporters

This event is sanctioned by BC Road Running, a division of BC Athletics. Thank you to the Sechelt Downtown Business Association for organizing the parade and road closures that allow this event to take place.
